Overnight moves, today's calendar, and what I'm watching

Stocks head into the week on the back foot after a chip-led selloff dragged all three major indexes to weekly losses, with the July 28–29 FOMC meeting now in focus.

Not financial advice — this is my own morning prep, shared. Numbers are as of Friday’s close ET and move fast. Verify before acting.

The one-minute read

The semiconductor selloff is the story: fears that AI hyperscalers may pull back on infrastructure spending — stoked by strong new Chinese AI models like Moonshot’s Kimi release — pushed the SOX toward a 20% drawdown from its highs and dragged the Nasdaq down 1.4% Friday. With CPI already behind us and the FOMC decision coming July 29, chip sentiment and early earnings are what move markets this week.

Overnight & pre-market

  • S&P 500: 7,475.69 (−1.0%)
  • Nasdaq Composite: 25,520.24 (−1.4%)
  • Dow Jones: 52,146.42 (−0.8%)
  • 10-yr Treasury yield: 4.55%
  • Fed Funds target range: 3.50%–3.75%
  • 30-yr mortgage avg: 6.55%, trending up (from 6.49% last week)
  • 15-yr mortgage avg: 5.93%, trending up (from 5.82% last week)

Movers worth noting

  • NFLX −10% — Q2 revenue of $12.56B narrowly missed consensus despite an EPS beat, sending shares sharply lower Friday.
  • NVDA −2.2% — led a broadening chip selloff on fears AI hyperscalers will scale back infrastructure capex; AMD, INTC, and AVGO also fell.
  • ISRG −11.4% — Intuitive Surgical slid after keeping its da Vinci procedure-growth forecast unchanged, disappointing investors.

Today’s economic calendar (ET)

  • Conference Board Leading Economic Index for June, 10:00 AM ET (prior: 0.1%); otherwise a quiet day with routine 3- and 6-month T-bill auctions.
  • On the radar: FOMC decision Wednesday, July 29 (2:00 PM ET) — the Fed held at 3.50%–3.75% in June, so guidance on any fall cut is the main event. Next CPI: August 12; next jobs report: August 7.

On my watchlist

Whether the chip selloff stabilizes or becomes a full “DeepSeek moment” repeat — the SOX flirting with a 20% drawdown while the 10-year sits at 4.55% is a tough setup for growth multiples. Earnings season broadens out this week, which could either offset or confirm the AI-capex worry.

Bottom line

Cautious into the week: the AI-capex scare is sentiment-driven rather than confirmed by hyperscaler guidance, but rising yields and firming mortgage rates give little cushion. Solid earnings and capex reaffirmation from big tech would change the view quickly; more evidence of cheap, capable Chinese models would deepen the derating.
